saw several nice model 21's at the louisville show this weekend. Most were 16's, wondering why some many 16's. was it a popular ga. also big spread in prices, $5900 to $15,000.

The 16 gauge being among the lowest numbers produced versas the 12 and 20 gauges and because of thier vesatality are now sought after. The dealars know this and so do those who own them. I suspect it is just an attempt to cash in at the high water mark.
Winchester forged two frame sizes, one for the 12 and one that was used for everything else. A 16 does not weigh a lot more than a 20 and is currently perceived as a better round. The 20 gauge was an early 20th century introduction and like all new things had quite a following culminating in the 3" 20 gauge Magnum. The 3" 16 gauge never made past a few guns chambered for it.
21 prices depend on condition, grade, whether or not modified/refinished and all sorts of factors, some tangible and some not so tangible. I suggest acquiring a copy of Swing's book, study and look at all you can. When you feel confidant enough, go ahead and purchase.
This Forum can be a resource on any individual gun you might find.
BTW, after reading Swing's book and study, I decided on my first 21 as a 16 gauge. Eventually I ended up with a Pre War 26" 16 gauge SKEET model. Great gun, had a very nice refinish and served me well. Hope this helps.-Dick
