Gents; In one of my 12ga. Mod. '21's -- The right barrel is marked "Mod" and the left barrel is marked "Full" . The choke constriction on the right (Mod.) barrel is 0.007" and the choke constriction on the left barrel is 0.030".
I thought that perhaps the right barrel had been "opened-up" somewhat by a prior owner. I didn't worry too much about it since the right barrel breaks
16yd. trap targets really well at normal ranges. (I admit that I have not pattern-tested the gun). In any event, I recently purchased a nice Model
'97 (made in 1912) with 28" barrel marked "Mod." This gun shows no evidence of ever having been altered. The Mod. '97 choke measures 0.007" restriction also. Has anyone had experience measuring the "modified" choke constriction on the Model 97, 12 and 21 (12ga. guns)?
By the way, the nominal bore diameters on the Mod. '21 (both barrels) is 0.731" and the Model '97 is 0.729"".
I always thought the the "modified" choke constriction was supposed to be about 0.015". Could the Winchester guns be an exception to this? Or as Elmer Keith would have said -- maybe this is one of the "dim mysteries"
